what sort of margin do wine merchants / supermarkets etc run at? i am keen to understand the approxomate mark up on a bottle of wine from a supermarket or wine merchant in the UK. I have found stats on what in real terms an empty bottle costs (seems to be circa 55p) which does not seem a good metric. I can't believe a wine seller makes 55p regardless on whether i pay him / her £3 a bottle or £20. Any views from those in the know would be appreciated.
What is a good cheap red wine to purchase? I was wondering what good red wine I could buy that is under $10 Canadian?. You know that kind you can get at a supermarket or at your local Wine merchant. I don't like Merlot, and I want something light and fresh so it doesn't taste too strong. Any ideas?
What would make people's online wine-buying experience better? I took a break from my other projects to help my dad bring his wine business to online markets, and I want to ask your input. There is a whole lot of "high-tech" and very little "high-touch" currently going on in the wine market today. And for the few exceptions, the reverse is true. That is, it seems like wine merchants online either have complex websites that skimp on the human touch or antiquated, neglected websites that don't do a good job merchandising the product but when you call you get to talk to a human on the other end. I'm trying to find out if it's a worthwhile endeavor to try to bridge that divide. I'd be interested in getting people's top 3-4 peeves regarding their online wine buying experiences. We specialize in selling rare, vintage and top-rated wines. In other words, the top 1% of wines in the world, so our product is fairly high-ticket.
Direct Wine Shipments - allowed in your state? Ugh! Oklahoma law prevents direct wine shipments to a consumer. Third-party wine merchants in our state hold a tight grip on sales and are afraid of competition. This restriction is not helpful to our state wineries, which are not allowed to ship out of state as well. We had a few bills before the state legislature, but they died this session. Does your state allow direct shipment or if not, are you fighting to overturn the law?
Question of the two wine merchants? I once heard this story. There are two wine merchants travel together to the market. Merchant A was thirsty yet he did not want to drink from his own wine stock. So he bought some wine from Merchant B for a dollar. Merchant B then got thirsty and he use that dollar and bought wine from Merchant A. This went back and forth several times until both of them are out of wine, yet the net income between them is only that one dollar they used back and forth. My question is. This is a perfectly valid business model... but if this is true, what is the point of our economic system? I am very confused at this point. I want to know what is the flaw of this story, and why it is different from our real world business model.
Wine aging: from year of release or vintage? I have a question about the aging of wines. For example, sources might say a given type of wine should be aged between 2-5 yrs. Do these recommended aging times run from when you pick the bottle off of the merchant's shelf, or from the year of the vintage?
merchant and his 3 sons (urgent please reply..)? Three sons of a deceased wine merchant were left 21 casks of which 7 were full of wine, 7 were half full of wine and 7 were empty. They had to be divide the 21 casks evenly among themselves so that each son received the same amount of wine and the same number of casks. No wine could be poured from one cask to another. How were the casks divided?

Remember water into wine? When JC did that wasn't he essentially stealing from the local wine merchant? He should have bought more instead of using magic is all I'm saying.
I once was reading a short story but missed the ending? To explain, I had this old book I think the Penguin book of Ghost Stories. I was reading this story, but before I got to the end, I found someone had torn a few pages from the middle. I have never found the same story again (though I have tried to look for it), and have always wanted to get to the finish. It was an old horror story, about a murder, the body being kept in a cask of wine. Where the victim's blood fined it so much, the detective investigating the missing man's disappearance thought it was delicious when he drank some. I think it was called 'The Wine Merchant', or something vaguely similar. Do'es it sound familiar to anyone, ring any bells; anyone got any idea what it was called?? Any help appreciated. Thanx.
Here are some funny dismissal statements? When people lose their jobs they may be dismissed, sacked, fired or kicked out. Why shouldn't people in other walks of life also have their own terms for "dismissal"? An office-worker could be defiled. A salesman could be disordered. A writer could be described. A journalist could be depressed. A botanist could be deflowered. A wine merchant could be deported. A traffic warden could be defined. A cashier could be distilled. A poet could be diversified. A celebrity could be defamed. A cricketer could be detested. A climber could be dismounted. A jailer could be excelled. A policeman could be unwarranted. A judge could be dishonored. A bishop could be disgraced. A model could be deposed. A neurologist could be unnerved. An engine-driver could be distrained. A gambler could be discarded. A conjuror could be disillusioned. A prostitute could be delayed. Can you think of any others?
What is the best Lebanese wine ? While one may not think of Lebanon as a particularly well-known wine region, Lebanon is one of the oldest, if not the oldest wine producing regions of the world. Famed for its majesric cedars and mountains, Lebanon, the blessed land of Canaan surrounded by eternal snows, has been a centre of wine making since the dawn of time. Lebanon's fertile soils were thus famous for their wines in ancient times, and were highly regarded in Greece, Anatolia and above all in Israel, which maintained close commercial ties with the Phoenicians. Phoenician merchants shipped rich and sweet Lebanese wines in amphoras to all four corners of the Mediterranean, to be drunk by the rich citizens of Athens, Carthage and Rome. Lebanon therefore gets credit for the propagation of wine growing, through its Phoenician ancestors around the Mediterranean, along with the colour purple and the alphabet. But what is the best Lebanese Wine ?
What is the answer to this cryptogram? My sister got this code cracker cryptogram for homework, and it is really hard. the question it states is: the first word reading down the sixth column derives from an Old French (plural) word for wine tasters or wine merchants' servants. it gives you the letters O,D,L and the rest is numbers, but she needs the letters in order to attempt to solve it. Her teacher gave her one other word, further down the puzzle, loiter. Can someone please help
What are the legal requirements? Hi I have made a suggestion at work which has been knocked back however I am not convinced the reason is correct. We are a wine merchant who offer accounts with deferred payments to customers as we do not hold a credit license. Opening an account is done manually I wanted to offer this facility online however I was told we legally require a signature. Can anyone confirm if this is correct as you can open Credit Card Accounts online these days without a signature. thanks.

What are the chances this 1965 wine is still good? I found a bottle of 1965 Pichon Baron online for only $40. In the description it said "mid-shoulder fills, soiled labels, some corroded capsules." I called the merchant (K&L) and asked what this meant and if was likely bad and that's why the price was so low. The lady on the other end said the mid-shoulder fill is just a result of the age and evaporation but that the wine, while past its prime, should still be good. She even said if it's not, they will refund it. For that price, it's not a big deal if it is corked or spoiled, but as I'm anticipating it's arrival I'm can't help but hope it's good. I love Bordeaux but have never had one older than 14 years so I don't know what to expect. What are the chances that a 43-year old 2nd growth is still enjoyable? Thanks! Please don't answer if you're just here to show how funny you think you are. None of the joke answers have been funny or clever so move on to another site.. I think I found the answer. Apparently, Chrisitie's published the following in 1987 http://www.vinrare.com/ullage.jsp Thanks for everyone's answers!
math problems.. help? please and thank you. Two wine merchants enter Paris, one with 64 casks of wine and the other with 20.
